People's Bank and People's Leasing and Finance PLC Chairman W. Karunajeewa Passes Away

It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce that the Chairman of People's Bank and People's Leasing and Finance PLC, Mr. W. Karunajeewa, passed away on the morning of 29th January 2013 at the age of 66.

Mr. W. Karunajeewa was appointed as the Chairman of People's Bank in 2007, and was reappointed in 2010.He was also the Chairman of People's Leasing Company Ltd., People's Leasing Finance PLC., People's Fleet Management Ltd., People's Property Development Ltd. and People's Insurance Ltd. The Group's development into a leading financial conglomerate wouldn't have been possible without the outstanding leadership of Mr. Karunajeewa, who served with commitment and enthusiasm.

Mr. Karunajeewa received his primary education at Bowala Maha Vidyalaya and Dharmaraja College, Kandy, later attending the University of Peradeniya where he obtained a degree in Commerce. Thereafter, he took up a position as a teacher before joining the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in order to drive national progress. Mr. Karunajeewa held several posts as a member of the party, being appointed as the Administrative Secretary of the party in 1973 by the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

1987 saw Mr. Karunajeewa taking oaths as an Attorney-at-Law. A decade later, he was appointed Working Director of the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation, where he went on to become the Chairman. He also served as the Chairman of the Employees Trust Fund (ETF) in 2005 before becoming the Chairman of People's Bank in 2007.

In 2010, in recognition of his exemplary contribution towards the development of People's Bank and its subsidiaries, and to Sri Lanka's Banking industry, the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka awarded Mr. Karunajeewa with an Honorary Fellowship.

Mr. Karunajeewa was the beloved husband of Mrs. Kusum Karunajeewa and loving father of Indika Karunajeewa and Ms. Dilini Karunajeewa.

Cortege leaves residence – U/2/1, Anderson Flats, Colombo 5 – on January 31st 2013 at 3 PM for cremation at the Borella Cemetery.

People's Leasing Company PLC has yet again, been accolade the "Gold Award" in the Leasing Sector at the Annual Report Awards 2012 organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. The Company has been awarded the "Gold Award" for five consecutive years which surely marks the Company's competency and commitment in communicating accurate and transparent financial and non financial information to the stakeholders.

To add to the glory, following it's parents footprints, People's Finance PLC was also awarded the "Gold Award" in the Finance Sector after winning the silver award and bronze award in the previous years respectively.

Furthermore, it praise worthy to make public that People's Finance PLC has been awarded the "Bronze Award" in the Overall Management Commentary Category for the first time of the Company's history.

PLC Adjudged a Best Corporate Citizen


Mr. Andy Ratnayake, Senior Manager of PLC receiving the award and certificate as one of the Ten Best Corporate Citizens" at the awards night.

People's Leasing Company (PLC) was recognized as one of the "Ten Best Corporate Citizens" at the recently concluded "Best Corporate Citizen Awards 2012" presented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in consideration of the company's sustainability integrated business practices and CSR initiatives.

The Company was also adjudged a Runner Up amongst companies with a turnover of less than Rs.15 bn. People's Leasing was the only leasing and finance company recognized at this prestigious ceremony.

People's Leasing is a subsidiary of People's Bank and a public quoted company. The Company is assigned a national long term rating of AA-(lka) stable by Fitch Ratings Lanka and "B+" long-term and "B" short-term credit ratings by Standard & Poor's Ratings. PLC is the largest non banking financial institution in Sri Lank in terms of advances and asset base.

Opening Ceremony of the New PLC Head Office Building


The new Head office building of People's Leasing Co. PLC has been opened officially on 25th July 2011, by Hon. Basil Rajapaksha, Minister of Economic Development.

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksha - Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena - Minister of Water Supply and Drainage and Chief Government Whip, Hon. Geethanjana Gunawardena - Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Thilanga Sumathipala - Member of Parliament, Mr. Ajith Nivard Cabral - Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr.W. Karunajeewa – Chairman of People's Bank, Mr. D.P kumarage – Chief Executive Officer of People's Leasing Co.PLC and other distinguished guests participated at the event.

The launch of the new web site of People's Leasing Group (www.plc.lk) coincided with the opening of the group's new Head Office in Borella.

People's Leasing Group new website was officially launched by Hon. Basil Rajapaksha, Minister of Economic Development, and it was coincided with the opening of the group's new Head Office in Borella. At the event Hon. Basil Rajapaksha, had a video conference with People's Leasing Company Branches located at Matara, Kandy and Jaffna.

The Leasing Sector contemplated People's Leasing Company PLC as a force to rekon with, having won the prestigious Gold Award for the fourth consecutive year and in the process making history. Whilst last year their subsidiary, People's Finance PLC claimed the Bronze Award this year to the contentment of the entire company they upgraded themselves picking up the Silver Award in the finance sector category.

This recognition from ICASL is an acknowledgement of our Annual Report of its transparency, timeliness, clarity, consistency and professionalism in Preparation and Publication of Financial Statements, business performance, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility.

People's Leasing declares open its Supplementary Building


People's Leasing declares open its Supplementary Building adjoining the PLC Head Office which comprises of the Call Centre, Cafeteria and the Fitness Centre. The new building was opened on 28, August 2012 by the Chairman, Mr. W. Karunajeewa, in the presence of Mr. D.P. Kumarage, CEO/GM of People's Leasing, corporate management and staff.

The Call centre will be a dedicated unit to attend to customer queries of the entire PLC Group while the Fitness Centre will be equipped with a range of equipment and a professional instructor after office hours to assist employees.
